ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Assamese Melamora College was founded in 1987. The current intake capacity of the Department is 150 with five sincere, hardworking and well dedicated faculty members. At present the Department offers ‘Choice Based Credit System’ undergraduate programme with the compulsory papers- Ability Enhancement Compulsory Courses and Skill Enhancement Course. The prime objective of the Department is to prepare the undergraduate students with the updated knowledge of Assamese Language and Literature following thoroughly the syllabus provided by Dibrugarh University for today’s contemporary competitive environment. The Department is committed to nourish the students into competent citizens of future by imparting quality and value based education pertaining to Assamese Language, Literature and Culture. Now with the aim of making each and every student a better learner and a responsible citizen, along with the regular classes, the department provides remedial classes, organizes Departmental Seminar,Workshop, Group Discussion etc. along with this, under the guidance of Departmental teachers, a hand written wall magazine “FEHUJALI” and a hand written poem magazine “KABYANJALI” is being published annually. The Department has a Forum “ASOMIYA SAHITYA CH’ORA” to enrich the intellectuality and creativity of the students.

MISSION

The Department of Assamese was started with a mission to impart quality higher education for all sections of society especially to the socially,economically,and educationally disadvantaged students of rural areas and TGL(Tea Garden Labours) communities. We aspire to equip students for life, making them not only competent job seekers but also to be self-employed socially committed citizens well equipped with a sense of tolerance and justice by making them aware of their rights and duties for the betterment of the society.

  • To arrange for periodic assessment of students’ progression and development.
  • To promote quality research and innovative practices.
  • To work together with the other stake holders for quality evaluation, promotion and sustenance.

STRENGTH:

  • All faculty members are efficient, sincere, hard working and active involvement in student related programmes.
  • Faculty members are very helpful and friendly relationship with the students.
  • Apart from teaching, teachers are involving in various co-curricular activities of the college and also attend different Workshop, Seminar, Training Program, Orientation, Refresher Course, FDP etc.

WEAKNESS:

  • Lack of enough ICT facilities
  • Insufficient infrastructure facilities.
  • Financial help is needed for digitalization of the department

OPPORTUNITIES:

  • Scope for introducing M.A. Course in Assamese.
  • Scope for language and cultural studies of different tribes of Assam.
  • Scope for opening a “Study Centre of Performing Arts.”
  • To held different National and State level Seminars & Workshops on Language, Literature & Culture.

CHALLENGES:

  • To motivate the students to prepare themselves for higher studies and to take part in competitive examinations of state and national levels.
  • To make the students aware about the utility of UG courses and its learning outcome.
  • To keep pace with the dynamic requirements of Higher Education

INFRASTRUCTURAL FACILITIES:

LIBRARY :

The central library of the College “Gangadhar Saikia Library” is the general need of the students. However, Department of Assamese has a small library with 250 number of subject related/reference books. Some books are bought by the teachers and some are sent by the book publishers as specimen copy. These books are used by the teachers and students. The magazine is Edited by the students of the Assamese Department under the supervision of the teaching staff. The Department subscribes the journals Gariyosi (ISSN), Satsori (ISSN), Prantik (ISSN) etc.

WALL MAGAZINE:

  • A hand written wall magazine “FEHUJALI” is published every year. The Department also publishes a hand written poetry magazine “KABYANJALI” every year by the collective effort of the students and teachers.

DEPARTMENTAL FORUM:

  • The Department has a Forum named “ASOMIYA SAHITYA CH’ORA”. The Department organizes different activities such as “One Day of Spring”, Birthday Celebration of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika etc. to develop the hidden talents of the students.
  • COMPUTER: Personal Laptop is used in departmental activities.

FIELD STUDIES & DEPARTMENTAL TOUR:

Educational Tours & Field Trips provide an opportunity of experiential learning to the students. In order to ensure the maximum benefit, a field trip or an educational tour is organized every year by the Department. The Departmental Tour & Field Studies were conducted to create environmental awareness and to aware the students how to preserve bio-diversity and to introduce the students about the rich heritage of Assamese Language, Literature and Culture.
