About the Department
The Department of Economics is one of the oldest departments of Melamora College. The inception of the department dates back to the very establishment of the college in 1987. Since its inception, the subject has been taught as a core subject till 2022 and in 2022, honors course is initiated in the Subject. Over this more than three decade long period, the department has been trying to impart quality education in Economics.

Mission

The Department of Economics was started with a mission to impart quality higher education for all sections of society especially to the socially,economically,and educationally disadvantaged students of rural areas and TGL(Tea Garden Labours) communities. We aspire to equip students for life, making them not only competent job seekers but also to be self-employed socially committed citizens well equipped with a sense of tolerance and justice by making them aware of their rights and duties for the betterment of the society.
 To create an academic environment for promotion of quality education.
 To arrange for periodic assessment of students' progression and development.
 To promote quality research and innovative practices.
 To work together with the other stake holders for quality evaluation, promotion and sustenance.

One faculty member being the Vice-principal is in-charge of all the academic and co and extra -curricular activities in the college and also a member of the Governing Body of the college. One of the other two faculties is also a member of G.B. Other two faculties of the department are also involved in various cells and committees and perform various co and extra- curricular activities.

Library:
Students generally use the central library of the college. However, Economics department has a small library of its own. The department library has around 100 books including both text and reference book. Both the faculties and students use the library. The students are not allowed to bring the books to home.

Classrooms with ICT facility :
No separate class room for the department. The smart class room with ICT facility is sometimes used for departmental purpose and the room equipped with projector is also sometimes used.
Best Practices:
To adopt students enrolled or willing to enroll in the department who is from economically weaker section.
To help those students enrolled in the department who is badly injured in some accident or physically handicapped.
Program Outcome –(CBCS)
The subject Economics is not limited to only one career. Careers in economics are widely ranging and diverse.
->Economics subject enables the students to build up a professional career as Economists, financial Advisors, Economics
Planners and Policy Makers.
->It enables the students to build up careers in the public sector such as in public taxation and waste services, public enterprise, energy and other forms of govt. spending.
->It enables them to start career in civil services such as-planning and Indian administrative services, Indian economic services and in financial sectors Insurance companies like LIC, Kotak Life Insurance, in private and public sector banks, multinational corporations etc.
->It also enables to become entrepreneur or businessman in production of various goods and services, to get academic jobs in private and public sector like college teachers and other govt. job etc.
->It prepares them to cope up with the stress and strain involved in the process of Economic Development.
->It enables the students to learn economics, particularly its applications and foster the development of their own skills in economic reasoning and understanding.
->It develops strong numeracy and statistical skills, enhance analytical ability of the students to deal with their real life situations.
->After studying the structure of Indian Economy, students will be exposed to economic reforms in India and problems of Indian Economy.

WEAKNESS:
Students lack knowledge of Mathematics which are normally used in Economics and therefore, it becomes difficult for them to understand the subject. Less consciousness about the subject among the students. Students’ Economic condition is very poor.
OPPORTUNITIES:
Department is capable to undertake interdisciplinary courses.
Department is ready to create economic awareness among the people of the nearby villages or communities.
Economics is a subject which has opportunities in diversified fields Inculcate the entrepreneurship skill among the students.
CHALLENGES:
1. To teach Economics which is a dynamic subject.
2. To develop the infrastructural facilities of the department.
3. To generate demand for the subject among the potential students.
4. Number of students are decreasing year by year. Most probably the reason may by that they find HS syllabus difficult or, hard to understand as mathematical part is included in the syllabus.
5. Almost all the students are usually come from non-mathematical background who do not understand the diagrams or mathematical parts of economics. This is a major problem in front of the faculties.
6. Inadequate availability of learning resources relating to the syllabus of CBCS course can also be treated as another challenge of the department.
7. Finding out quality textbooks in regional language.
Future Plan:
1. Distinguished faculties from other institutions may be invited occasionally.
2. National/international seminar/workshop on current issues may be organized.
3. To encourage teachers to take up research projects.
4. To conduct educational tours from the department to acquaint students with the development of various parts of the state and also help them to make comparative study of Regional Development.
5. To undertake social responsibility like community awareness on swachchata, plantation, small savings, entrepreneurship development, etc.
6. To start Add-on Course such as Rural Development, Entrepreneurship.
7. To prepare Departmental Academic Calendar.
8. To publish a departmental wall magazine.
9. To organize Psychological Counseling session to the Students through Professional Counselors.
